"Maia Toll’s Illustrated Bestiary is a collection of animal-inspired personal reflections, gorgeous illustrations, and short rituals for spiritual growth. Part lore, part animal facts, and part personal development guide, this book is a perfect modern-day rendition of the Medieval conception of bestiaries. Although each entry in the book may address a few fun facts or provide a glimpse into traditional beliefs about each animal, Toll’s writing really shines when discussing what life lessons a person can learn from these animals. She expounds upon these lessons by offering simple rituals and thought exercises inspired by each animal, intended to help the reader heal and grow in their personal life journey." - MuggleNet
"Spiritual teacher Toll and artist O’Hara (The Illustrated Herbiary) deliver a series of beautiful oracle cards and a companion book that aim to connect readers to the spirits of wild animals. Toll recalls her experiences with shamans on her travels, including a trip in which she studied with an Amazonian shaman and a yearlong apprenticeship with an Irish medicine woman, to explain how earth medicine... connects us not only to the world around us but also back to ourselves. With questions and rituals outlined for each of the 36 animals (deer, beaver, finch, tabby cat, and salmon among them), Toll provides scientific and mythological information on each, and sidebars appear throughout explaining, for instance, the effects of climate change on animals and vulnerable species. O’Hara’s bright, bold colors and energetic designs match Toll’s impassioned prose. Suggestions for best oracle practices will make even readers new to oracle cards feel at ease. Toll also suggests being the animal by imagining their physical existence through body movements, inviting the animal into your dream time, and free-writing exercises to increase one’s spiritual connection to specific animals. This poetic, gorgeous oracle deck will make a perfect gift for spiritual animal lovers." - Publisher's Weekly
"What beauty of a book! A beautiful edition, a simple and direct style. Each of the animals included has a particularity that makes them unique, and some do not usually appear in books of this type." - Alan D.
"Accompanied with beautifully illustrated cards, each aspect brings something that is delightfully fresh. The book is friendly easy to dip into and for me, with the exercises allowed me to get a deeper understanding of various area's of my own life as well as choices I've made. It's introspective, allows for your own journey." - Gareth W.
"I could stare at these pictures all day! They are beautiful and artistically depicted to help the reader understand the beast as they first read about them and then are invited to engage in ritual and reflection specific to each. I found myself reading about the medicine each offers and yearning for partnership with animals that I never expected to (hello, salmon)." - Lisa L.
"Filled with ancient wisdom as well as practical applications, this stunning work is a brilliant work of Art. The illustrations are bold and total eye candy. The wisdom inside ranges from Greek mythology to Native American lore, Irish legend, to the now." - Ashley N.
"This book has truly captivated me within just the first few pages. I have always felt connected with animals. When I was little, I wanted so badly the power to speak to them. This book is the closest I'll ever get, it's magic. It makes you open up to realize, you already have that power within, they are always communicating with you-if only you listen. The way Maia talks to you about connecting with the animals on a spiritual level is so enticing. You can't help but get an instant urge to channel your inner wolf." - Madelyn K.
“Uplifts, guides, and encourages self-reflection. ”

About the Author
Award winning writer Maia Toll has been many things— a horseback riding teacher, a clinical herbalist, and (oddly) a university professor— but by far her favorite title is author. Her best-selling Wild Wisdom series (The Illustrated Herbiary, The Illustrated Bestiary, & The Illustrated Crystallary) offers a glimpse into the knowings of the natural world and the wilds within ourselves. Maia contemplated these insights during her yearlong apprenticeship to a traditional healer in Ireland. Though apprenticeship sounds terribly romantic, it was most often lonely, leaving Maia plenty of time to listen to the ravens, roses, and rocks. She quickly learned that the world was a whole lot bigger than her human-centric upbringing had led her to believe. When not obsessively reading books and “talking” to trees, stones, and her two dogs, Maia drinks copious amounts of tea and helps run Herbiary, a multi-city natural wellness and sacred living store she owns with her partner Andrew. She teaches and blogs to an international following at maiatoll.com where she constantly reminds people that using critical thinking skills and talking to flowers are not mutually exclusive activities.
