THIS WEEK’S READ:
My students often want to know what their purpose is; ancient stories tell us we all have a unique purpose called our “medicine.”
Our best medicine is this original medicine: the spark you brought into this life that is yours and yours alone. When you live from this soul-space, you thrive, even when external circumstances are difficult.
Each of us knows, deep inside, who we are. But this sense of self can get buried beneath who we think we’re supposed to be.
Over a lifetime, you’ll have many manifestations of the same essential self.
Check out this poem I wrote fifteen years ago when I was teaching poetry to kids in Harlem. Can you see my essential self poking her head out?
It’s early spring, still cold enough for gloves. I’m trotting figure eights on a hot headed ex-racehorse. Eights are lulling, soothing even, and soon my breath is synced with his and time is slipping a bit sideways. Slowly, breath by breath, the separation between horse and human dissolves. This is my first experience of transcendence.
Herbiary: Shop & Book
I spent my 34th year in Ireland apprenticed to a traditional healer. We crafted medicine from roots & bark, leaves & petals… and also from words, stringing them into stories to mend the spirit.
When I returned to the States I opened a small apothecary which has grown into Herbiary.com, with stores in Philadelphia, PA and Asheville, NC.
This blog is where I share my stories. In August, 2018 it will be joined by my first book, An Illustrated Herbiary. This book is whimsical, gorgeous, and OMG yummy; I can’t wait to share it with you. Stay tuned!
